![]() For me, there were some inherent life complications being from a working-class family and being a student at a fancy private school. This was seventh grade, a period in which mathematical education in Chile was being guided by abstraction and axiomatic mathematics was taught even at this level. I still remember that she was very happy when I was able to show that any angle inscribed in a semi-circle was a right angle. It was here that my teacher, Maria Eugenia Pardo, noticed that I had some talent for mathematics. Before the opening of the Panama Canal, Valparaiso was a major port for ships going from Europe to the West Coast of the United States. This was a British school founded in 1857 to serve the community of immigrants coming from England as part of the business activities around the port.
